Ah, the wishing well, the place where hope lives in the endless coins that are thrown into the void. Hope can be a wonderful force that keeps you motivated as you move through tough times. Hope can also be very much like a wishing well: a shot in the dark with no real plan of action. This kind of hope needs to be addressed because it often leads to more inaction, distraction from the real issue and denial of what is really going on. Hoping in this way is based in fear, and if your actions are based in fear, you may doing be doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with hope itself. Hope can be a driving force that keeps you going when you have no other reason to persevere. The problem that occurs with hope is when it keeps you from taking action. When you want to see any type of change in your life, you must take action. When you sit back and hope that things will change what you are really doing is giving your power away to your circumstances. Hoping in this way is a refusal to take responsibility for what is going on in your life. By not taking action, you can blame everyone and everything around you for your situation because you have done nothing to create what is going on around you. 

The other thing that you find in the wishing well is fear; looking down into the endless darkness as it drops down into the ground can be terrifying. Fear will cause the same results as hope without action: inaction, distraction and denial. When you avoid fear, an interesting thing happens: it gets worse. As with anything you avoid looking at in life, your fears will get bigger and louder the more you try to avoid them. This does not serve you in any way. By turning to face you fears, you take your power back and you will find a gift waiting for you on the other side of your fear. The only way to get the gift is to venture into your fears for the sole purpose of exploration and learning the lessons that await you inside. 

Because both hope and fear can paralyze you, they need to be treated in a similar manner. This process is simple - not easy, but simple. In order to face your fears and get the gift they have to offer, you must move toward your fear. It is a big step to turn and face what you are afraid of and this is the first step. Once you find yourself face-to-face with your fear, you must take steps to move toward it. This is the only way you will be able to truly move through your fears and get the gifts that are waiting for you. With hope, you must take similar action and move in the direction of what you hope will happen. When you can take actions that align with your hope, you are sending a message to the Divine that you are willing to do the work to get to where you want to be; this is how prayer works.

All the hopes and fears you have yet to deal with are adding to the web inside you. In order to clear that out, you need to take action and begin facing these things so you can move through them and clear them out. Today, take a look at what some of the hopes and fears are that have added to your tangled inner web. There is nothing you have done wrong, so be gentle with yourself as you go through this process. Identify the things that are trapped inside so you can take the necessary actions to clear them out. Remember, this is a process, take it one step at a time.

Taking action is a victory in itself; celebrate yourself for committing to the journey.

1. What are some fears you have been avoiding? How do you avoid these fears? What would it be like to be free from these fears?

2. What are some of the things you hope for? What actions have you taken to make these things a reality? If you haven't taken any action, what is one action you commit to take to see your hopes manifest?

3. Which type of avoidance do you notice occurs most often in your life: inaction (indecision), distraction (doing something else that is unrelated) or denial (pretending it doesn't exist)? Are there any situations that you find yourself avoiding today? What is one action you could take in these situations to bring them closer to resolution?
